ModestIt wasn't.
the real story was three footnotes down
Anthropic shipped Opus 4.8 and basically told you not to care. "A modest upgrade." Days later, the first Mythos-class model is public — and the only warning was one line buried at the bottom of the release page.
The 3 things they buried
footnotes ¹ ² ³ — bottom of the page
It admits when it doesn't know
Opus 4.8 is the most honest model they've shipped. It tells you when it isn't sure instead of confidently inventing an answer. If you use AI for anything that touches money, research, analysis or clients, fewer made-up answers is worth more than any benchmark score.
The footnote just came true
One line at the bottom of the page pointed straight at Mythos — the cybersecurity-grade model they kept locked away, the one that made governments nervous, restricted to a handful of giants. "Coming in the next few weeks" turned out to be days. What's now public is Fable 5: the same tier of technology, made safe for general use. Ask it something high-risk and it quietly routes you to Opus 4.8 instead. So it's not Mythos handed to everyone — it's arguably bigger: Anthropic built a tier above Opus and gave the public the safe version. That was the headline. Not "modest upgrade."
A thousand agents from one prompt
From a single prompt, Opus 4.8 launches hundreds of agents working in parallel — up to a thousand in one run. Rebuild an entire codebase or overhaul a landing page overnight, while you sleep. The reel itself was recorded on the new model with that exact feature switched on. Not a preview. Live.
