* MIKE MEANS BUSINESS / AI HACKS DAY 21
The free WhatsApp gateway that does what Twilio charges thousands for
You commented WHAT, so here it is. Someone built an open-source, self-hosted WhatsApp API gateway called OpenWA. It runs the messaging pipe that businesses rent from Twilio and a stack of SaaS tools every month, for the price of a cheap server and zero per-message fees.
Self-host it once and you own the whole thing: multiple numbers, one dashboard, webhooks that fire messages automatically. Put Claude on the other end and it stops being canned auto-replies. It becomes a 24/7 agent that answers, qualifies, and books.
Quick heads up before the guide. This is very doable yourself if you are a bit technical, and the full walkthrough is below. But if you would rather have it set up properly for your business, with numbers connected, automations wired, and Claude answering your messages, that is literally what I do. Reply to this email or hit the button and tell me WHAT, and I will take a look at your setup.
DM me WHAT ->1. What it actually is
OpenWA is a free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted WhatsApp API gateway. You run it, your data stays on your server. No paywalled features, no per-message billing. Full REST API, multi-session support, real-time webhooks, a web dashboard, and Swagger docs out of the box.
2. Deploy it (Docker, minutes)
Repo: github.com/rmyndharis/OpenWA
Project site: open-wa.org
Then open these:
Connect a number by scanning the QR code in the dashboard. Run multiple numbers from one instance with multi-session. Host it on any cheap VPS for a few pounds or dollars a month.
3. Wire your automations (via webhooks)
Every one of these is a webhook firing into OpenWA:
- Speed to lead. New enquiry hits a webhook, auto-reply goes out within seconds.
- Review requests. Job marked done, auto-ask for the five star.
- No-show killers. Appointment reminders with a confirm reply.
- Reactivation. Broadcast an offer to your whole customer list from the dashboard.
- Agency setup. Every client number on one instance.
4. The kicker: put Claude on it
Point the inbound webhook at a small script that calls the Claude API. Pass it the customer message plus your business context, then send Claude's reply back out through OpenWA. Now it is not a set of canned responses. It is an AI agent that answers every message, handles the questions, and books the call around the clock.
5. The honest caveat
This is an unofficial gateway, not the official WhatsApp Business API. Do not blast spam. Keep it conversational and opt-in or you risk a number ban. For high volume or regulated use, weigh up the official API. For most small businesses, self-hosted is plenty.
That is the whole pipe. A free gateway, real automations, and Claude answering on the other end for the cost of a small server.
Build it yourself with the steps above. Or if you want it done for your business, reply to this email or DM me WHAT and I will set the whole thing up, Claude included.
