You're Using the Wrong Claude
Projects vs. Cowork vs. Code — the full breakdown.
You commented CLAUDE. Here's everything.
Projects, Cowork, and Code all use the same AI. Same brain. Same model. But they work completely differently. Most people open claude.ai, type in the chat box, and use that for everything. That's like owning a Swiss Army knife and only using the toothpick.
This guide breaks down what each one does, when to use it, how to set it up, and the workflows that make each one powerful. By the end you'll know exactly which door to walk through for every task.
The 3-Second Decision
Ask yourself one question before you open Claude:
|
PROJECTS
"I want Claude to remember my rules."
Persistent context across conversations.
|
|
COWORK
"I need a real file I can open and send."
Claude creates actual documents on your desktop.
|
|
CODE
"I want something built."
Claude reads, writes, and runs code in your IDE.
|
That's it. Pick the door that matches what you're doing right now.
Projects
Use when you want Claude to remember your rules.
Projects are persistent workspaces inside claude.ai. You create a project, upload reference files, write custom instructions, and Claude remembers all of it across every conversation inside that project.
Think of it as a briefing folder. Every time you start a new conversation in that project, Claude has already read the folder. No re-explaining. No "act like a..." prompts. Your rules are loaded before you type a word.
When to use Projects
→ Writing with a specific voice or style guide
→ Research that references uploaded documents
→ Ongoing work where consistency matters
→ Any task where you'd normally re-explain context every session
Not for
→ Building apps or running code
→ Creating files on your actual computer
→ Anything that needs to touch your file system
How to set up a Project
1. Go to claude.ai
2. Click Projects in the left sidebar
3. Click Create Project
4. Name it (e.g., "Content Business" or "Client Research")
5. Add Custom Instructions — your voice, rules, standards
6. Upload reference files — brand guides, templates, examples
7. Start a conversation inside the project — Claude reads everything first
Best for: Writers, researchers, strategists, consultants, anyone who repeats the same context.

Cowork
Use when you need real files, not just chat.
Cowork is Claude with hands. Instead of giving you text in a chat window that you copy-paste somewhere else, Cowork creates and edits actual files — documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs. Real deliverables you can open, edit, and send.
This is the tool for people who aren't developers but need Claude to produce real work. Not chat. Not text on a screen. Files.
When to use Cowork
→ Creating documents, reports, decks, spreadsheets
→ Editing files on your machine
→ Managing tasks across multiple files
→ Any output that needs to be a real file, not text in chat
Not for
→ Writing software or running code
→ Complex coding projects
→ Anything that needs a terminal or IDE
How to access Cowork
1. Go to claude.ai
2. Cowork appears in the left sidebar (currently in beta)
3. Click Cowork to open the workspace
4. Add Skills via Customize → Skills for specialized tasks
5. Ask Claude to create a file — it produces a real downloadable document
6. Edit, iterate, and download when done
Pro tip: Cowork is where Claude's Skills shine. Upload a presentation skill and ask Claude to build you a deck. Upload a spreadsheet skill and ask for a financial model. The Skills tell Claude how to produce professional-grade files.
Best for: Founders, managers, marketers, anyone who needs deliverables — not just answers.

Claude Code
Use when you want something built.
Claude Code runs inside VS Code or your terminal. It doesn't just answer questions about code — it reads your codebase, writes code, runs commands, fixes bugs, manages files, and does the actual work. It's not suggesting. It's doing.
This is the power tool. It's what separates the top 1% of Claude users from everyone else. But it requires a paid plan and a code editor.
When to use Code
→ Building apps, features, automations
→ Debugging and refactoring existing code
→ Multi-file editing across a project
→ Git workflows, tests, deployment
→ Any task where Claude needs to run commands
Not for
→ Non-technical tasks where you just need a document
→ Quick questions you'd normally ask in chat
→ If you don't use a code editor
How to set up Claude Code
1. Download VS Code (free)
2. Open VS Code → press Cmd+Shift+X (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+X (Windows)
3. Search "Claude Code" → install the one by Anthropic
4. Click the Spark icon ✦ in the sidebar
5. Sign in with your Claude account (Pro or Max required)
6. Start talking — Claude can now see and edit your files
Best for: Developers, technical founders, anyone building software.

The Real Insight
Most people use the regular chat for everything. It works, but it's like using a Ferrari as a shopping cart. You're getting a fraction of what Claude can do.
The power move isn't finding one tool and sticking with it. It's switching between all three based on what you're doing right now.
Morning: Open Projects → plan content strategy with your brand rules loaded
Midday: Switch to Cowork → create the actual presentation for your client
Afternoon: Open Code → build the landing page Claude just designed
Same AI. Three doors. Match the door to the task. That's it.
